Interpersonal coaching behaviors and athlete fear of failure
(Universidad de Flores ; Confederación Argentina de Patinaje, Argentina, 2026) Sarries, Sofía; Raimundi, María Julia; López, Laura; González Hernández, Juan
The present study aimed to examine how social contextual variables (coaches’ interpersonal styles) predict fear of failure in adolescent figure skaters, as well as the mediating role of socially prescribed perfectionism. A total of 232 female figure skaters (M = 17.44; SD = 2.98) from South America participated and completed the Sport Climate Questionnaire (SCQ), the Controlling Coach Behaviors Scale (CCBS), the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI). The analyses were conducted using RStudio software. Results show that coaches’ interpersonal style and socially prescribed perfectionism are significantly associated with athletes’ fear of failure. In both analyses, socially prescribed perfectionism acted as a significant mediator, although with different strengths across models. In the controlling style model, the mediation explained 56% of the total effect, indicating that this style strongly increases fear of failure through socially prescribed perfectionism. In contrast, in the autonomy-supportive model, the mediation accounted for 33% of the effect, showing a more moderate protective impact: higher levels of autonomy support reduce socially prescribed perfectionism and, consequently, fear of failure. Figure skating is a technical, judged, and early-specialization sport, grounded in the pursuit of an “ideal performance”. For this reason, athletes in this discipline often show elevated levels of socially prescribed perfectionism, which includes people’s perception that significant others have unrealistic standards for them, evaluate them critically, and pressure them to be perfect, as well as high levels of fear of failure, variables associated with psychological maladjustment. These findings highlight the importance of coaches’ roles in both the athletic and personal development of adolescents. By adopting autonomy-supportive strategies, coaches can act as key protective figures, reducing athletes’ perceptions of external pressure, lowering perfectionistic concerns, and helping buffer the emotional impact of mistakes.
